Subject Matter:

Taken on one of Evans's photographing trips to rural New York in the early 1930s, this image depicts a farmhouse, a car, and trees in profile view. Planarity, rather than the objects' existence in physical space, is underscored. Only shadows cast upon the house's white walls and the grassy ground provide intimations of depth.
