Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph presents a close-up view of two women who stare intently at a new and shiny transistor radio, evidently listening to the news. As the title indicates, this scene takes place in Chukotka, the most northeasterly district of the former Soviet Union. The heavy fur coats and headscarves of the two women imply a fairly cold climate. The two listen the news on a radio, which suggests that modern technology penetrates even the remotest corners of the vast U.S.S.R. (as does the presence of an official Kremlin-appointed photographer).

Physical Description:

Two women look down intently at a transistor radio that one of them holds in her hand.
