Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a view of the Irish countryside in County Wicklow, and was created at the base of a hillock looking upwards. A cluster of trees stand silhouetted along the hilltop, their black, leafless canopies starkly contrasting with the overcast sky. Downhill towards the camera, the grassy slope abruptly breaks into an eroded rock-strewn bank that drops into a small pool. The water’s surface is perfectly still and mirror-like, reflecting the blades of the scraggily tall grass that sprout along its edges. A gnarled log rests at an incline down the bank. The various shifts in elevation in this photograph create a series of shadowy horizontal bands that steadily move down the slope towards the viewer. The effect of this lends the landscape a sense of eerie beauty that is at once bleak and sumptuous.
