Description

Subject Matter:

In this carte-de-visite photograph, United States Navy Commodore William D. Porter stands at a slight angle as he looks indirectly out of the picture plane. He wears his officer's overcoat unbuttoned, exposing a black waistcoat and a watch chain. Porter was an instrumental naval commander in the Western Theater of the American Civil War (1861-65). Here he poses for Mathew Brady, who produced a large number of cartes-de-visite of various Union Army and Navy officers during the war.
