Description

Subject Matter:

This image shows Windsor Castle from the point of view of several row boats moored on the Thames across the river. In the foreground boat a family appears ready to be ferried to the town on the other side of the river; a woman and child sit in the center of the foreground boat, and a man sits towards the back, and all three are facing the photographer. The rower of this boat is standing at the helm, closest to shore, with his face covered with a bandanna. Two younger boys, both facing the camera, are visible in a second boat in the lower left hand corner of the image. Windsor Castle, which looms in the background and gives its name to the title of the photograph, plays a distant second as subject matter compared to the small dramas of the figures depicted in the foreground of the image.
