Description

Subject Matter:

This photograph depicts a close up view of the wooden shingles on a house in Bodie, California. Once a booming gold town, Bodie was abandoned in the twentieth century and is now recognized as a National Historic Landmark. Tice's portfolio of 12 prints captures Bodie buildings and landscape views from a range of perspectives, including this detail of the side of a wooden house. By zooming in close, Tice focuses attention on the textures, tones, and shapes of the planks, which have bent and buckled through wear and age. It is through these material remnants, the photographs suggests, that Bodie's historical significance lives on.
