Join us for a walking tour of historic and new murals in Southwest Detroit. Vito Valdez, long-term resident and local mural expert, will lead the event along with George Vargas, founding member of La Raza Art and Media Collective and active artist and organizer in the public mural projects nationwide. Buses will take participants from UMMA to Detroit for this day-long event. Highlights will include CitySpirit, a mural created by George Vargas and Martin Moreno in 1978 and the Legends graffiti wall of Vernor Highway.

Presented as part of the Latinx Midwest History Symposium.

Open to the public, pre-registration required, including for Symposium attendees.

Note: This is a walking tour, so comfortable shoes are suggested. Participants will meet at UMMA to travel to the first stop together by bus. Please arrive by 9:45 a.m. as the bus will depart at 10:00 a.m. sharp. During the walking tour, stops will be made to allow participants to purchase lunch.

Following the walking tour, participants will reboard the bus to return to UMMA. Expected UMMA arrival time is 4:00 p.m.
